Born in Middleton, Nova Scotia in 1901, Mona Parsons was a member of the Dutch Resistance in the Netherlands and the only Canadian woman to be imprisoned by the Germans during the Second World War. Her capture and remarkable escape from prison is a remarkable story.

The theme for African Heritage Month 2018 is “Educate, Unite, Celebrate Community”, to honour and pay homage to African Nova Scotians and their long legacy of uniting a passion that has provided a base to educate and celebrate an important part of Nova Scotia’s culture and Heritage.
Saturday, January 27 is Family Literacy Day.
Public Libraries across Nova Scotia are celebrating Family Literacy Day with special programs and activities, and invite you and your families to join them.

The Hackmatack program is back for its 19th year. The program for children in Grades 4, 5 and 6 introduces young readers from Atlantic Canada to great Canadian books and authors.
From October 1 - 7, 2017 the focus in libraries will be on seniors. Seniors Week is a province-wide initiative which focuses on programming, services, books and materials for seniors at the nine public library regions in Nova Scotia. It is one of the many activities taking place in October, Canadian Library Month, and overlaps with the Provincial and Federal Seniors Days on October 1st.
Teen Read Week allows public libraries to celebrate Teens and their contributions as part of the public library community, and for public libraries to highlight the services, collections and programs they offer youth in Nova Scotia.

For Heritage Day 2017, and as part of the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, Nova Scotia recognizes Mi’kmaq culture and the many accomplishments of the Mi’kmaq people.
A number of activities are being held across the province, including a two-game hockey challenge February 18 in Membertou, and February 20 in Millbrook.
Family Literacy Day (FamilyLiteracyDay.ca) is a national campaign created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999. It is held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.
ABC Life Literacy Canada is encouraging families to "Learn at play, every day." Engaging in literacy activities as a family improves a child’s skills and also helps adults keep their skills sharp.
The Nova Scotia government, in partnership with members of the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association, has recently contributed titles in accessible formats to the NNELS database, highlighting Atlantic Canadian authored and published books.
Picture Book Month is an international literacy initiative that celebrates the print picture book during the month of November.
In this digital age where people are predicting the coming death of print books, picture books are growing in popularity and importance for their artwork, literary quality, and unique ability to bring children and parents/care-givers closer together as books and stories are shared.

Adam is a library technician at the headquarters office in Amherst, Nova Scotia. He performs cataloguing for Cumberland Public Libraries.
What do you love most about the library? A library is adaptable and ever-changing. Libraries always prove themselves to be relevant, even as the interests of library users change, as library collections evolve, and as new technologies and literacies emerge.

Professional storyteller Anne Glover will be touring across the province during the month of July, performing at 29 public libraries, from Digby to Liverpool and all the way to Sydney.
