Events – African Heritage Month 2015
As African Heritage Month launches for 2015, libraries across Nova Scotia are pleased to be play a part in marking the significant contributions of African Nova Scotians with a variety of events and displays.
This year’s African Heritage Month theme is Justice: People, Places and Events.

Celebrate African Heritage Month and Heritage Day 2015

Description: Our first February Heritage Day will honour Viola Desmond for her role in advancing civil rights in Nova Scotia. Join us for a celebration of Viola Desmond and African Heritage Month with stories from Viola’s sister, author of “Sister to Courage”, Wanda Robson of North Sydney, and words from her publisher Ron Caplan of Breton Books and Dr. Graham Reynolds, Viola Desmond Chair in Social Justice at Cape Breton University. Film Screening of NFB film 'Journey to Justice'

Description: Celebrate African Heritage Month, and the upcoming new Heritage Day holiday - also appointed as Viola Desmond Day this. This National Film Board (NFB) documentary 'Journey to Justice' (47 min directed by Roger McTair in 2000) pays tribute to a group of Canadians who took racism to court. They are Canada's unsung heroes in the fight for Black civil rights. Focusing on the 1930s to the 1950s, this film documents the struggle of 6 people who refused to accept inequality, including Viola Desmond.

'Justice: People, Places and Events' celebration for African Heritage Month- Antigonish

Description: The Antigonish Guysborough Strait Regional Network, Town of Antigonish, County of Antigonish and African Nova Scotian Affairs will be having a special ceremony in celebration of the launch of African Heritage Month at the Antigonish Town and County Library/People's Place Library. The is a public event, all are welcome and light refreshments will be served!
'Loyalties' (1987) - Antigonish

Description: Upper Big Tracadie/Lincolnville Education Committee and the Black Educators Association will be hosting this film screening as part of their "Future Past Present" series celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the BLAC Report. Plot: Lily and her three youngest children join her husband David Sutton, a doctor in an isolated northern Alberta town. Their eleven-year-old son arrives later from boarding school. David conceals a dark secret which caused the family to leave England without telling anybody. They befriend a neighbor Rosanne, who throws out her boyfriend after he beats her up in a bar. Lily, who is very English and out of place in the town, hires the half-Native Rosanne as a housekeeper, and eventually the two women become good friends, until the secret emerges again.
